Heritage Open Days 2022

September 10

It’s great to open up again for the ever-popular Heritage Open Days after an enforced break due to Covid.

We will post more details and booking links nearer the time, but for now, put the date in your diary!

You will be able to book a tour of parts of historic Cotesbach Hall, which has been owned and lived in by the same family for nine generations. Many of the documents in our archive relate to the Hall, the Estate, and the Marriott family who have called it home since 1759.

This year we are very excited to welcome Tony Mugridge, one of the leading experts on bricks and brickmaking in the country. Tony will be holding a drop-in brick identification session where you can bring along a brick and he will be able to tell you its age, most probably where it was made and possibly even who made it. He will also give a talk over the weekend – if you think a talk about bricks might be boring – then you are wrong! Tony has some really fascinating brick-related stories to tell, his talks are very interactive and engaging.

There will also be the chance to join a guided walk around the historic buildings of Cotesbach Estate with Tony. He will be dating the different bricks used in the buildings of the estate, and revealing the hitherto hidden history contained in the bricks. Where were the bricks made and who made them? There will also be discussion of how and why the buildings may have been changed and modified over time.

Over the past 40 years, Tony’s consummate professionalism, specialist skills and technical knowledge of the trade have resulted in him often being consulted on the archaeology and structural restoration of historic buildings. His more recent television work has included BBC 4’s The Children Who Built Victorian Britain, Channel 4’s The Restoration Man, BBC 2’s Britain’s Heritage Heroes, UTV’s Lesser Spotted Ulster and BBC 2’s Restoration Home.
